McCarthy came through Collingwood's Next Generation Academy after playing with the Oakleigh Chargers, and the Magpies took him late in the 2025 national draft. The 199cm key forward had a strong final junior season to push himself into draft calculations, and has since completed his first pre-season at the club. He is yet to play a senior AFL game.
