Quick, tireless and clean by foot, McInerney debuted for the Sydney Swans against Melbourne at the SCG in Round 4, 2019 after arriving from the Northern Knights. Used mainly on a wing or across half-back, the 189cm runner has twice won the Dennis Carroll Trophy as most improved, in 2021 and 2024, and placed top ten in the 2025 Bob Skilton Medal. He has played 122 AFL games and kicked 59 goals.
