A Gaelic footballer from Ballincollig in County Cork, O'Connell joined St Kilda as a Category B rookie in 2023 after the club's list managers travelled to Ireland to see him. He made his senior debut in Round 1 of 2025 and took a match-saving defensive mark against Geelong a week later. The 189cm defender has played 20 AFL games.
