Rivers trained for a bigger midfield role before injuries across Melbourne's backline pulled him straight back to his natural defensive post in 2025, where he barely missed a beat. The 188cm defender is a 2021 premiership player and twice took the coaches award attached to the Norm Smith Memorial Trophy, in 2023 and 2024. He has played 140 AFL games and kicked 16 goals.
