Waverley Park

History

Waverley Park was an ambitious attempt to create a large-capacity AFL venue in Melbourne's outer suburbs, built in 1970 with a capacity of 72,000 that eventually expanded. The ground hosted a rotating cast of Melbourne clubs during its 29-year AFL history, as teams used it for larger matches while maintaining their traditional home grounds.

Despite its size, Waverley Park never developed the identity or consistent occupancy rates of Melbourne's established grounds. The venue suffered from its isolated location and the AFL's continued preference for traditional inner-city grounds, resulting in inconsistent usage and financial challenges throughout its existence.

The ground's closure for AFL in 1999 was followed by its transformation into a residential area, with the suburban development ultimately replacing the ambitious sports venue.

Legacy

Waverley Park's history represents both the ambitions and limitations of 1970s sports development. While it was impressive in scale, the venue failed to establish itself as a necessary part of Melbourne's AFL infrastructure, ultimately being replaced by residential housing that better served the surrounding community.
