Football Park/AAMI Stadium

History

Football Park, later rebranded AAMI Stadium, was South Australia's premier AFL venue from 1991 to 2013, serving both the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide Power. Designed specifically for Australian rules football, the stadium represented a significant investment in South Australian sport and hosted two fierce intra-state rivals.

The ground witnessed the Crows' rise through the 1990s, including their first Grand Final appearance in 1996, and hosted countless fiercely competitive Showdowns between Adelaide and Port Adelaide. Despite its relatively modest capacity compared to Melbourne's venues, AAMI Stadium became an iconic symbol of South Australian AFL culture during this 22-year period.

Both clubs relocated to Adelaide Oval in 2013, marking the end of AAMI Stadium's AFL era and the completion of the modern Oval's transformation into a multi-sport venue.

Legacy

The closure of AAMI Stadium in 2013 represented South Australia's shift toward centralised sporting facilities. While Adelaide Oval now hosts both AFL clubs, AAMI Stadium's legacy remains strong in the memories of generations of South Australian football fans who witnessed critical moments in both clubs' histories at the venue.
