Whan came through the Fremantle Dockers' Next Generation Academy on the strength of his South African heritage, having averaged 26 disposals across 12 colts matches for South Fremantle, including a 41-disposal, four-goal afternoon against East Perth. He played all four matches for Western Australia at the national championships and ran 6:11 in the 2km time trial at the draft combine. He is yet to play a senior AFL game.
